Your First Session: What to Expect at Kind Counselling

We know that the hardest part of therapy is often just showing up for that very first appointment. It’s completely normal to feel a mix of nerves, hesitation, or even a bit of "imposter syndrome" ("Do I really need to be here?").

To help lower the pressure, here is a transparent look at what happens when you step into a session with us.

1. The "Soft Landing"

Your first session is primarily a "get to know you" conversation. There’s no pressure to have your entire life story mapped out or to dive into your deepest fears within the first five minutes. We start exactly where you are.

We’ll likely chat about:

  • What brought you in today? (The "right now" feelings).

  • What does a "better" day look like for you? (Your goals).

  • Logistics & Privacy: Ensuring you feel safe, informed, and comfortable with the process.

2. Building the "Click"

Research shows that the most important factor in successful therapy isn't the specific technique used—it’s the relationship between you and your counsellor.

3. No "Right" Way to Do It

Some clients come in with a list of notes; others sit down and say, "I don't even know where to start." Both are perfect. Our job is to help you untangle the threads at a pace that feels sustainable, not overwhelming.

Common First-Session Questions

  • Do I have to cry? Only if you need to. There is no "crying requirement" in therapy!

  • Will you judge me? Never. We are a shame-free zone.

  • How long does it take to feel better? Everyone is different, but most people feel a sense of relief just by finally externalising what they’ve been carrying alone.

Ready to take the first step?

You don't have to wait for a crisis to choose yourself. Whether you want to deep-dive into the past or just find some breathing room in the present, we are here to walk alongside you.
